Shonda Rhimes Says ‘Scandal’ is Not a Guilty Pleasure, But Pleasurable TV

Shonda Rhimes

*Shonda Rhimes isn’t worried about the controversy her creations attract. All she does is “make the shows.”

The writer/producer recently shared in an interview with Deadline.com, that she believes the success of “Grey’s Anatomy” allowed producers the opportunity to take a risk with hit show “Scandal.” And she doesn’t care that the show features a strong black female lead. In fact, her intention is only to do her job.

When asked if she believes she has pioneered a new path for characters like Olivia Pope, she said, “I have no idea. It would be nice to say no, but since you are asking the question, probably yes.” Rhimes says she doesn’t care why people watch the show as long as they don’t describe it as a “guilty pleasure.” She said that phrase means “It’s crap but I can’t stop watching it.”

Fun. Since “Scandal” premiered, it’s developed a cult following, much like “Grey’s Anatomy.”
