POSITION: NEWS DIRECTOR Department: Programming Supervisor’s
Title: Program Director
Mission: To inspire thoughts, raise consciousness and provoke community action through the broadcast of current news and relevant information. To produce and deliver a news program that is accurate, relevant and informative. To present the current local, national and international news events in a credible manner with the emphasis on the African American perspective when possible.
Business Objective: The news must be presented within the terms of the station’s format in a concise, clear, simple and direct manner. The delivery should be dramatic in presentation, yet scrupulously accurate.
Duties/Responsibilities: The News Director shall have the following duties and responsibilities:

  1. Obtain news from news sources such as wire services, ABC News Network, CNN, etc. as it occurs, updating throughout the broadcast day.
  2. Ensure the five W’s (who, what, when, where, and why) are included in the news delivery.
  3. Seek additional news sources from city and community sources and incorporate into produced news segments.
  4. News should be targeted toward the African American consumer, categorized, grouped and presented in a news format.
  5. Ensure that the quarterly issues and program list reports required by the FCC are prepared and submitted to them in accordance with the FCC guidelines and regulations, submitting a copy to the station’s attorneys and copies placed in the public file.
  6. Organize in the identification, production, coordination and delivery of “Town Hall” style meetings.
  7. Clearly outline the Public Affairs Director’s job duties in writing, specifically regarding news coverage, assignments and public service activities pertaining to the Public File.
  8. Attend or assign press conference coverage as well as other newsworthy community events, i.e. political rallies, fund raisers, etc.
  9. Prepare and distribute press release on major KJLH community promotions, i.e. Town hall meetings.
  10. Must attend a mandatory school career day once a year; participate with the Station Intern Orientation and attend/support job fair.

Job Qualifications: Minimum three to five years as a news reporter Must possess a natural curiosity and interest in the facts. Must have strong verbal, written and organizational skills Must have a high quality on-air voice Computer literate Recording equipment experience and broadcast board familiarity
Education: High school diploma College/university degree preferred from an accredited institution
